Just a paragraph about "eco-conscious craftsmanship" and a certification badge with no license number and no named holder. She has spent a decade learning that "clean" on a serum and "eco-friendly" on a detergent are unregulated adjectives. The same detector fires here. What "sustainable" actually cashes out to in furniture
The word "sustainable" carries no regulatory definition in furniture. No federal agency stands behind it. What the buyer in that showroom is actually looking for cashes out to three checkable properties: is the piece built to be repaired rather than replaced, are its materials named specifically enough to look up, and are its certifications carried at the scope they actually cover. Everything else on the product page is styling.
This guide gives you a five-question framework for evaluating any furniture brand, including Covelle. The questions apply the same rules to everyone.

A brand that answers all five in writing can be evaluated. A brand that answers none is selling a photograph.
Question one: is it built to be repaired, or built to be replaced?
The least glamorous meaning of "sustainable furniture" is the most load-bearing. Keeping a piece in service for twenty years does more than any single material choice. The EPA's Sustainable Materials Management framing puts furniture inside a significant durable-goods waste stream, and service-life extension is the highest-leverage individual action.
Concretely, this comes down to construction. A kiln-dried hardwood frame can be opened, re-glued, re-blocked, and handed to a new owner. Particleboard cannot. Joinery that is doweled, glued, and corner-blocked holds across decades; stapled assembly fails under load well before the cushion shows wear. A spring deck that can be re-tied by an upholsterer costs $300 to $500 to restore; a platform bonded into a sealed base cannot be touched without destroying the unit. Cushion cores that can be replaced extend the life of a piece without discarding the frame.
These are construction facts. A brand either states them or does not. If the product page describes the frame as "solid wood" without naming a species, or the cushion fill as "high-density foam" without stating whether the core is replaceable, the disclosure has not happened.
A maker that builds this way will say so in the construction section of its product pages. One that does not will describe the cushions instead.
Question two: are the materials named specifically enough to look up?
"Hardwood frame" is not a material name. "Kiln-dried oak and maple" is. "Premium fabric" is not a material name. "Belgian linen, 100% flax" is. The test: can the buyer search the material name and learn something independent of the brand's own claims?

Question three: are the certifications carried at their honest scope?
A certification is a claim by a named issuer about a defined scope. The honest presentation names the license holder, the license number, and the specific layer or material the cert covers. Without those three elements, the badge cannot be verified.
FSC certifies wood custody chains at the named-license-holder level. It does not certify sofas or brands. If a brand claims FSC without naming the license holder and the number, the claim is not checkable; the FSC's own public search tool requires a license number to return results.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a finished-textile attestation held by the supplier who made the textile, not by the furniture brand that purchased it. When a furniture company describes itself as "OEKO-TEX certified," the question is: which supplier holds the cert, and on which product line?
CDPH Standard Method v1.2 measures total volatile organic compound (TVOC) emissions of a specific material under controlled conditions, against a published threshold, on a dated certificate. Question four: what is the chemistry of the parts you cannot see?
Four invisible layers carry the most risk in conventional upholstered furniture: adhesives, surface finishes, flame-retardant strategy, and stain-treatment finishes.
Adhesives and finishes range from Water-Based formulations to solvent-based lacquers. A brand using Water-Based adhesives throughout can state it at the layer level and substantiate it with the supplier composition spec.
Flame retardants are where the question matters most. TB117-2013, California's flammability standard, can be met two ways: through added chemical flame retardants in the cushion, batting, or fabric; or through construction and materials that are naturally flame-resistant. Wool is naturally flame-resistant. A sofa with a wool batting layer and the right construction can meet TB117-2013 with no chemical flame retardants in any layer. The distinction matters. The class of chemical flame retardants dominant in upholstered furniture from the 1970s through the early 2000s has been the subject of ongoing independent research on health and environmental persistence. A brand that states its flame-retardant strategy in writing, specifically, is giving the buyer something she can evaluate.

For any engineered wood components, CARB Phase 2 / TSCA Title VI formaldehyde compliance is the federal minimum bar. A compliant maker states it in writing. Asking for it is a reasonable request that any compliant maker can answer in one sentence.
Question five: what does the price buy, per year of use?
Price comparisons in furniture almost always focus on sticker price and ignore replacement cost. The math that matters is cost per year of use.
A $2,000 sofa replaced after six years costs roughly $333 per year, plus disposal cost and the time cost of restarting the research cycle every six years. A $4,500 sofa serviced by an upholsterer at year fifteen and still in use at year twenty costs roughly $225 per year. The premium evaporates when the arithmetic runs forward. This is illustrative math, not a lifespan promise. The inputs that determine the denominator are frame construction, suspension serviceability, and cushion core replaceability.

The red flags that end an evaluation early
"Sustainably made" with no materials list anywhere on the product page. Fails question two.

Collection names that include "eco," "green," or "conscious" over unchanged spec sheets. The name is styling. The spec sheet is the disclosure.
"Solid wood" with no species named. Solid pine and solid walnut carry different longevity profiles. A species name is not a luxury; it is the minimum a frame disclosure requires.
Fiber content that contradicts the styling story. If the tag reads "poly blend" and the photography reads "linen," the photography is the marketing and the tag is the fact.
A returns page that treats the piece as disposable. If the brand's own policy assumes replacement rather than repair, that is a signal about what the construction was designed to deliver.
