What is actually happening as leather ages
Leather is skin, and skin changes with contact. On a full-surface hide, the top grain, the same layer that gave the animal its natural texture, stays intact from tannery to living room. That layer is porous. It absorbs the oils from your hands, the humidity in your house, and the light near a window, and it responds by darkening and softening. This is not damage accumulating. It is a material doing what an organic surface does when it is touched.
On a coated hide, that same top grain has been sanded down, corrected, and buried under a pigmented finish to hide natural markings and produce a uniform look. The finish is not leather. Every leather sofa shows some of both over ten years. Direct sun fades any leather, coated or not. Seat cushions age faster than backs and arms because they carry more weight and friction. Which leathers age toward patina, and which age toward failure

Bonded and bicast leathers are a further step removed. They are leftover leather fibers pressed into a sheet and covered with a polyurethane film embossed to look like a grain pattern. They age like the film wrapped around them, not like leather, because structurally they are mostly not leather.
None of this depends on how any of these leathers were tanned. Tanning method is a separate question from surface finish, and it is not one this piece answers. What determines the ten-year look is whether the natural grain layer was kept or covered.

A coated surface from the same starting point is typically cracking at the arms and the seat edge by now, with the substrate underneath exposed and unable to recover on its own.
